As an esteemed member of the nobility, Dekis is often dressed in high-quality fabrics.
Personality
Relationships
Thesion Solon
Dekis’ beliefs differed greatly from his father’s as Thesion believed a Solon does not bow their head nor show any weakness. He would subject his son to a series of physical beatings until he bled to increase his endurance and even fed him poisons as a child to build his immunity. Ultimately, Dekis was a dutiful and obedient son towards his father, taking his whippings and lectures without complaints, although he would occasionally disobey his father by teaching Medea Solon sword fighting and visiting her in secret when she had fallen ill from poison. However, their relationship reached a breaking point after Dekis learned about his father’s association with human trafficking. Sickened by his father’s reprehensible actions, Dekis gave up his inheritance and cut off all ties with his father and he showed no visible emotions towards his father’s execution nor did he appear affected by his father’s death.
Meti Solon
Meti is Dekis's mother who expressed concern for her well-being after her health declined from imprisonment.[4] Before Dekis cut ties with his family, Meti had a lot of pride in her son. However, she did not care about his happiness nor the fact that Thesion Solon beat him.[5]
Medea Solon
Since Medea’s birth, Dekis formed a close loving bond with his younger sister, considering her his ‘pride and joy’ and his ‘sole place of refuge’ in an otherwise abusive household. At the age of one, Medea quickly learned to speak, her first word being ‘Deki’ and from then on, Dekis regarded Medea as a gifted child. In turn, Dekis affectionately nicknamed his younger sister ‘Medi’, making him the only character in the series to refer to her by a nickname. As the years went by, Dekis noticed Medea’s innate affinity for sword fighting and decided to teach her in secret despite their father prohibiting her from learning beyond basic techniques. However, their parents soon picked up on how exceptionally close the two were in comparison to other siblings, believing that Medea could potentially become a source of weakness for her older brother.[6]
Dekis exhibits a protective nature towards Medea, not wanting her to witness the gruesome sight of him being whipped by Thesion Solon until he bled onto the floor. When he realized she had been watching, he apologized in return and opted for a smile to ease her worries.[7] As a highly perceptive child, Medea knew of the pain Dekis suffered from that others were not able to notice, she pulled her brother out of the banquet under the pretence of finding her missing brooch on the balcony. Instead, they snuck out to a lake to watch the stars and Medea made Dekis shed his jacket where she expressed tearful concern for her brother’s bleeding back. While Medea gazed in wonder at the starry reflected lake, Dekis silently appreciated her eyes which took in the scenery before them. Although Dekis praised Medea’s intellect and talent, he feared and worried for what was being ingrained into her young mind by their father’s teachings.[6]
Following his discovery about his family’s association with human trafficking,[8] Dekis gave up his inheritance, leaving Medea as the sole heir to the Ducal. Before leaving, he questioned Medea how long she planned to stay in the Solon Household, but she was unable to articulate a proper reply. [9] Upon his departure, Medea’s relationship with Dekis changed significantly to one filled with bitter resentment as she berated him for his cowardice, telling him to live in regret for the rest of his life.[10] Despite their estrangement, Dekis still affectionately describes Medea as his “one and only precious little sister.” He wrote a series of letters to her inquiring about her well-being, desiring to one day walk along the beaches with his sister. However, their relationship became distant as Medea rarely responded to his letters and her replies only consisting of business talks and updates on their mother’s declining health.[11] He keeps a picture of a peacefully content Medea in his locket, refraining from returning home out of respect for Medea’s wish to not see him.[10] After making amends, Dekis showcased his fear of losing his sister at the tournament as he recalled his wife’s unfortunate fate.
Nana
It can be assumed that Nana served as Dekis’ primary caretaker like she did with Medea Solon while they were growing up. The two had a close and positive relation as Dekis excitedly called for Nana when he heard Medea speak her first word.
In Medea’s flashback, a young Dekis can be seen in a field with her and Nana wearing a flower crown.
Etymology
- The name "Dekis" is the Oscan equivalent of the name Decimus,[12] meaning "tenth."[13]
- The etymology of the name "Solon" derives from the Greek word Σόλων Sólōn, meaning "wise lawmaker." The name references the Athenian Greek statesman and lawmaker who sought to prevent political, economic, and moral decline in ancient Athens. His legislations eventually served as the foundation for the current Athenian democracy.[14]
Trivia
- In Episode 76, Dekis leaves a Salvia flower behind as a clue for Medea Solon to locate the document regarding their family’s corrupt wartime acts. Salvia holds the symbolic meaning of longevity, wisdom, esteem and good health. It is later seen again in Episode 78 when Dekis promises he will one day plant a whole garden filled with Salvia for Medea.[15]
